Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev has revealed the club wanted to keep Anthony Martial but that Manchester United made an "incredible" offer for the forward that they simply could not refuse.
The Premier League outfit have reportedly agreed to pay an initial £36 million (€50m) for the 19-year-old attacker but sources in France suggest that the fee could rise as high as £59m (€80m).
Vasilyev refused to be drawn on the exact numbers involved but did admit that Monaco had been blown away by the size of the bid.
“We wished to keep him this season but Manchester United made an incredible offer that neither Anthony, nor AS Monaco, could refuse," he stated on Tuesday.
"Our project showcases many players and Anthony has proven his worth and potential on the pitch.
"Though this move was not planned, it shows the quality of the work undertaken by the technical staff but also that we were right to recruit him two years ago.
"We wish Anthony the best for the next chapter in his career."
A product of the Lyon youth system, Martial joined Monaco in the summer of 2013 for €5m and made his Ligue 1 debut in November of that year, aged 17.
The lightning-quick striker featured regularly during the 2014-15 season and is now set to make his first appearance at international level, after last week being named in the France squad for this month's friendlies against Portugal and Serbia.
