The Spanish hosts were two goals down by half-time due to strikes from Brazil international Hulk, but los Che revived the match shortly after the break thanks to an own goal from Witsel and Andre Gomes' 73rd-minute equaliser.
Andre Villas-Boas' men were salvaged all three points, however, when Witsel cannoned in via the woodwork at Mestalla, condemning the spirited Liga side to slender defeat in the Champions League group stage opener.
