Van Gaal: Man Utd will beat Liverpool... but WON'T win the title!

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has ruled out winning the Premier League title this season, though he has vowed to beat Liverpool when the rivals clash on Saturday.

The Red Devils have taken seven points from their opening four domestic matches having spent in excess of £100 million over the summer on the likes of Memphis Depay, Anthony Martial and Morgan Schneiderlin.

Despite that, Van Gaal has played down the chances of the Old Trafford outfit winning a first title in three years and is instead targeting becoming English champions for the 21st time in 2016-17.

"No, maybe third or second place is realistic but I expect us to go for it next season," he said when asked whether United would win the title at a Q&A session for season ticket holders.

He added on their defeat to Swansea City last time out: "I am sorry, the defeat, was my fault. Don't worry, we will win on Saturday [against Liverpool]."

The former Netherlands manager also claimed United fans are the best supporters in world football due to them getting behind the team even if they are losing.

"At Barcelona when the team is losing fans wave their white hankies, Munich fans start whistling and at Ajax the fans call for the previous manager.

"Manchester United fans get behind their manager, they get behind their team. That is why United fans are the best in the world."
