Van Gaal hints De Gea could start against Liverpool

Louis van Gaal has hinted that David de Gea could make his first start of the season on Saturday for Manchester United against Liverpool.

The Spain international ended months of uncertainty surrounding his future by signing a new four-year contract, with an option to extend for a further 12 months, on Friday.

De Gea's dream move to Real Madrid fell through on the final day of the Spanish transfer window due to an administrative error leaving the 24-year-old in limbo.

Summer signing Sergio Romero has been preferred in goal for United's first six games of the new season but the Argentina international has failed to convince, paving the way for De Gea to reclaim his place ahead of the crunch fixture at Old Trafford.

"You shall see - you never know. We have to judge him in training,” the United boss told MUTV.

De Gea could well be joined in the starting line-up by Michael Carrick who has recovered from the calf strain that saw him forced to pull out of Roy Hodgson's England squad last week.
Phil Jones, who has not played this season due to a mild thrombosis, is making progress but is still not ready to yet be considered for selection.
"Jones still injured but he's going well," added Van Gaal. "We need to speak to the specialist."
