Beckham finds home for proposed Miami MLS franchise

Former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder David Beckham has found a home for his planned MLS team in Miami.

The  former England captain, who played for La Galaxy in the US for five years, had been looking for a venue to host his new Miami-based franchise from the 2018 season.

After an initially fruitless search, Beckham has now identified the site of the Orange Bowl, the former home of the Miami Dolphins, as a potential base.

"We are as confident as we have ever been that we can move this forward," MLS commissioner Don Garber told BBC Sport.

"He has been trying very hard to get a stadium built. There has been a lot more progress lately than in the last 12 to 15 months.

"We have to finalise a whole bunch of deals with the city and the landowners but the site has been selected."

Beckham became one of the first major football stars to move to MLS when he agreed to join La Galaxy in 2007.

The deal that took the now-40-year-old to America contained a clause allowing him to own an MLS franchise at the end of his playing career.

And Garber admitted he is looking forward to Beckham being involved with the league once more.

"David has been out of MLS for many years now but we still talk about him," he said.

"He is a big part of our history. MLS wouldn't be what it is today if he hadn't decided to come in 2007."

Garber also revealed that his organisation have been in talks with the Premier League about a potential tournament involving clubs from both divisions.

Many English sides travelled to the US for post- and pre-season tours in the last few months, but Garber is keen to introduce a more formal arrangement.

“We have been talking to the Premier League about doing some sort of official competition as opposed to just having clubs come over to the country on a random basis,” he said.
