Arsenal's Gabriel faces ban and Naismith escaped red card, says Halsey

If you watched the games, do you agree with Mr Halsey? He says he wouldn’t be surprised to see the Football Association take action against Gabriel Paulista on Monday for his off-the-ball altercation with Marko Arnautovic.

Television replays showed a clear elbow on the midfielder in the build-up to a Stoke City attack late in the game.

He was very lucky that Jonathan Moss didn’t see it. But if the FA take retrospective action, which they should as the incident was not dealt with at the time, it’ll be a three-game ban for the Arsenal centre-back.

Steven Naismith’s hat-trick heaped further misery on Chelsea but should the striker have been on the pitch after his early kick out at Branislav Ivanovic?

It was an incident in the 14th minute that appears to have been missed by pundits and referee Andre Marriner.

It was a difficult call to make. It was an attempted kick out towards an opponent - violent conduct and a red card - and had another referee been in a better position seen it, Naismith could have been sent off.

Diego Costa was another who could consider himself fortunate. His forearm struck the face of Seamus Coleman and while on first viewing it looked like a reckless use of the arm, which would have been a yellow card, another referee may have seen it differently and deemed it as violent conduct.

As a referee, managing a player like Costa isn’t as difficult as it looks. Even though his English isn’t perfect, he’ll understand an official’s body language and in situations that threaten to boil over, you would utilise John Terry, the captain, to settle him down.
