Vermaelen: Barcelona share Arsenal's philosophy

Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen says he sees many similarities between his former teams Arsenal and Ajax and the current Liga and European champions.

The Belgium international made just one appearance for Luis Enrique's side last term following his move from north London, as he endured a disappointing personal campaign plagued with injuries.

A graduate of the famous Ajax academy, Vermaelen moved to the Gunners in 2009 where he enjoyed a five-year spell, and the 29-year-old believes his old clubs have much in common with Barca.

"It's the same philosophy. They are teams who want to play football to entertain and to avoid long balls," Vermaelen told Barcelona's official website.

"[To] keep the ball on the ground, scoring as much as possible and create a lot of chances."

Having now recovered from a hamstring problem which forced him to spend a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Vermaelen is hoping to play a key role in the club's future success.

"I feel good and I hope to contribute my share to the new success of the team," he continued.

"Last year we won the treble. It will not be easy to repeat that, but we will certainly try. The team is largely the same and we are just as hungry as last season."
