Ozil: I need a bigger ego to win Ballon d'Or

Arsenal star Mesut Ozil believes he needs to be more selfish if he is to achieve his ambition of winning the Ballon d’Or.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who took the Argentine’s crown as the best player in the world in January, have won the award every year since 2010 on the back of their record breaking goalscoring exploits.

Ozil scored just five times in 32 games for Arsenal last season and has been challenged by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to reach double figures this time around, and the former Real Madrid playmaker admits he needs to be more ruthless in front of goal if he is to gain personal recognition.

"I have to become more dangerous in front of the goal," he said when asked about winning the individual accolade.

"I was injured for long spells last season, and scored only five in 32 competitive games. I want to improve this. To achieve it, I have to be a bit more egotistical."

Ozil missed Arsenal’s victory over Newcastle last weekend with a minor knee injury but has been included as part of Joachim Low’s Germany squad ahead of their Euro 2016 qualifiers against Poland and Scotland.
