Luis Enrique: Spain fans who boo Pique are pathetic

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has defended Gerard Pique after the defender's controversial comments on Real Madrid, and hit out at the treatment his charge receives while on international duty.

Pique attracted the ire of Madrid fans when he said on Wednesday that he hoped things went "as bad as possible" for  Barca's arch-rivals.

But speaking in a press conference ahead of Saturday's visit to Atletico Madrid, Luis Enrique slammed critics for their supposed double standards.

"Guti was killed years ago for saying he always wanted Barcelona to lose but we know the hypocrisy in this society," the coach told reporters.

"Pique is a great guy, very sincere, very original because saying what he did, in the way he said it, is pretty funny."

Praising the "blessed, necessary rivalry between Spain's two best clubs," he added: "We are all adults here and each person can interpret that as they wish."

The former Real Madrid and Barcelona player also referred to the boos and whistles the defender receives while on international duty.

"It is pathetic, for any player on the national team because it can only damage the side," he fired.

Looking forward to Saturday's game, the trainer anticipated a tough clash against Diego Simeone's men.

"Atletico and Barca are both winning teams, each one has the identity of their coach and club. Simeone has won titles for Atletico and I have too.

"It will be difficult because Atletico had a great transfer window and reinforced well but we will travel with the conviction that we can play well and win."
